Three miles? Check!
Ten dateless college students? Check!
A field of Duncan County’s most eligible spinsters looking for love? Check!
The 1981 Duncan County Beach Running of the Cougars was one of those rare sporting events that asked a simple question:
How fast can a college student run when his future depends on it?
Every Valentine’s Day, ten brave young men lined up along Duncan County Beach for three miles of sunshine, sweat, panic, and increasingly desperate glances over their shoulders.
Waiting behind them?
A determined field of local ladies who had been assured by the Concerned Mothers League of Duncan County that second chances were important.
And third chances.
And, in certain cases, fourth chances.
The 1981 Boondrift Sports collection pays tribute to the mythical local legends who probably existed… somewhere out there.
This shirt combines old-school road-race style, sunny beach-town nostalgia, and the kind of completely serious local tradition that makes people stop, stare, and eventually ask:
“Wait… was this a real event?”
